The Dental Implant Process — Step by Step
A dental implant is one of the most stable and natural-looking ways to replace a missing tooth. It consists of a titanium post placed in the jawbone (replacing the tooth root) and a custom restoration on top. Here is how the process works.
How does the process work?
Treatment begins with an assessment and a 3D CBCT scan to plan the exact implant position. The titanium implant is then surgically placed into the jawbone. Over the following weeks to months it fuses with the bone (osseointegration). Finally, a custom crown, bridge or denture is fitted on top to restore the tooth. At JDental Specialists, the surgery is performed by an oral surgeon and the restoration by a prosthodontist.
How long does it take?
The full process typically takes 3 to 6 months, mostly to allow the implant to fuse with the bone. Cases needing bone grafting or a sinus lift may take longer, while some situations allow immediate placement. Every plan is tailored to the patient.
Is it painful?
Placement is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Mild discomfort and swelling afterwards is normal and is usually managed well with prescribed pain relief.
How long do implants last?
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, dental implants can last many years and often a lifetime. The restoration on top may eventually need replacement due to wear, but the implant itself is designed as a long-term solution.
